Most Americans will remember where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news of the death of President John F. Kennedy. When the nation mourned. Another occasion when people mourned the Kennedys was the day of the tragic death of John Fitzgerald Kennedy Jr., his wife, and sister in law. Here is where my part came in as I gave that announcement through the news.
All the people in the studio paused for a moment of prayer and silent reflection, done as each man confronts his own mortality. And we all were shown yet again that one can never take tomorrow for granted. There can only be a hope about what it will bring, and what it will mean for all of us.
I knew then that I would someday write a book about the Kennedys, and that this book would have maximum integrity, valuable information, and insights available nowhere else. This three book series is the result. Unlike many writers on the Kennedys, I do not have any axe to grind. Having been trained as an historian at Harvard University, I know how to glean facts and draw logical conclusions.
I thought it important when I conceived this project to tell the readers what I knew, which was considerable, about the Kennedy family and their place in American politics and on the world stage.
There have been other learned books on the Kennedys... on their supposed existence at Camelot, but I have written three shorter volumes, in the hope that you will not just have them, but read them and even study them, the better to give you an understanding of this family and its role in the nation.
Now let us begin. The time is right for such an exercise. The Kennedys are no longer seen as American royalty. The bloom has faded in these years from 1963, and now at last we can hope to put things into perspective. But it would be wrong if we abjured Camelot altogether, for it too was a place in their complicated story.
